Parle with Jacques Audiard

After the screening of his latest film Deephan, Jacques Aduiard held a workshop for the audience. With the help of the questions from the moderator, the director touched upon the most interesting aspects of the film. He told the audience that he had wanted to make a story about immigrants for a long time, but wanted it to be outside of the Francophone world. A particularly interesting question was about the process of casting the characters, since he actually found the right actor for the part in the second round of casting, but saw many more actors afterwards. When he started filming with this particular actor, the director wanted to explain to him what he needed to do, but the actor refused, saying that “this was a story about his life”. The actor had actually been a part of the Tamil Tigers and in spite of him and the whole community being quite suspicious at the start of the filming, in the end they were happy that someone addressed their issue.

Talking about the subject of the film, the director said it was about a make-believe family. He said that “love happens for the right reason. They come from different backgrounds – she is a civilian, and he is a former military person; it starts off as a lie, hostility, without love, but the man and woman discover they have something in common – and lie becomes a reality”.

Audiard also talked about the influence his father had on his work. He recalled the discussions they had and that they were usually about poetry and books. His father was of the opinion that screenwriting is not an art, but a skill and “made movies by default, although those were very good movies.”
