The 25-years-old John, his teenage brother Erbol, and their sickly 12 years-old sister Aliya, are forced to leave their house in the Kazakh city of Almaty. Fortunately, their mother left them a house in a remote village, where they plan to prepare their comeback. However, the District Officer’s brother, an alcoholic who has lived there illegally for 10 years, has no intention of giving the house up without a fight.
Adilkhan Yerzhanov was born in the Jezkazgan region of Kazakhstan in 1982. He finished his studies in film directing at the Kazakhstan National Academy of Arts in 2009, and was then able to continue his training in New York thanks to a scholarship. In 1999, he received critical acclaim for the first Kazakh animation series Kozy-Korpesh and Bayan-Sulu, and in 2001, his first film Rieltor also won awards. Prior to The Owners, Yerzhanov also shot Constructors.
