On the last day of festival, Jim Jarmusch’s latest film The Limits of Control was shown as part of the Contemporary Trends programme. After the screening of the film, jury member, author, producer and longtime associate and partner of Jarmusch Sara Driver, held a workshop for the students of film academies.
Last in a series of festival workshops, Driver began speaking about her own experiences working on film, emphasizing that it is very difficult to record and finance an independent film in the U.S. Although she hasn’t filmed since 1993, when her last movie was When Pigs Fly, she is now ready for the challenge again. Expressing satisfaction for participating in Kustendorf 2010, Driver thanked the students for getting the chance to watch their films and meet them as part of the jury.
- Thanks to all the young authors for these wonderful films, lovely stories from many different parts of the world – said Driver.
Thinking back on the time when she began making films, Driver said that was a time when people used to help each other, creating a small community, a team, in a slightly punk way.
- At that time, we made a sort of informal community that worked closely together, kind of like what Emir, on a higher level, managed to make here. – explained Driver, adding that the community comprised of Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee and other, now famous authors.
Answering the question of how to choose a good producer to work with, Driver said that the producer is supposed to be a kind of guardian angel during the making of the film, adding:
- A producer should fulfill the needs of the director and create a surrounding in which he will be able to realise his vision. Of course, the producer will remind the author of the budget from time to time.
Noting that it is important that young authors follow their instincts and form their own, individual voice, the famous producer said that she believes that things happen in cycles and that the world of film now may be governed by blockbusters, but that the future of film is in connecting young filmmakers driven by fresh ideas.
- I do believe that things will change thanks to young people like yourselves. The cinema is still needed, because the experience of watching a film with a group of people is invaluable and irreplaceable. It is necessary for you to be creative gangsters, to search for new film expressions, and the concept of a festival like Kustendorf can greatly help you achieve that.
