Emir Kusturica’s Workshop

On the last Festival’s day, shortened version of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing closing ceremony, directed by the famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou, will be shown as a part of the Contemporary Trends programme.

During the workshop held in the crowded ‘Damned Yard’ cinema, Emir Kusturica, founder and director of the Küstendorf Film Festival, after the explanation that he has chosen this release to close the Festival because that artistic event deeply touched him and mesmerized him, added:

– I believe that this is crucial masterpiece which marks the beginning of the 21st century. It included the best of every art and represents a magnificent creation.

After emphasizing how much is it important for such a masterpiece to be shown on the big screen, Mr. Kusturica said that nowadays art of moving pictures is present in more and more media, but in smaller and smaller size – on the internet, on PC screens and mobile telephone displays.

– Form strongly affects the aesthetics of a piece of art. I give a television due credit for transferring the information, but the real emotional impression and beauty can arrive only from the big screen.

Speaking of the further development of film in future, our famous director said the he believes that film will be quite similar to opera.

– Every bigger city will have two or three theatres where films will be shown on the big screen. It will be an aesthetic privilege and such a form in which film will be able to survive – concluded Mr. Kusturica.
